Glamorgan (Torbay) Kindergarten

Haere Mai - Welcome to Glamorgan Kindergarten

Glamorgan Kindergarten

Glamorgan Kindergarten is part of the group of kindergartens under the governance of the Northern Auckland Kindergarten Association and located in the older part of Torbay Heights.

Our curriculum is based on Te Whāriki, the Early Childhood Curriculum and planning is based on ongoing observation and assessment of children using a variety of assessment tools appropriate to Early Childhood.

We believe that Glamorgan Kindergarten provides children with a safe, interesting, stimulating and positive educational setting where learning areas and activities are provided to extend their growth - physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually.  Children are encouraged to be independent learners and critical thinkers in an environment that offers the opportunity to work alone or together, to make positive and appropriate choices while acknowledging and accepting that everyone is an individual.

Our goals are for the children at the kindergarten to become competent, independent thinkers with an enthusiasm for learning that will travel with them throughout their journey through life.

Our teachers are fully qualified and registered Early Childhood educators who are committed to the New Zealand childhood Curriculum - Te Whāriki.

Our History

Wild Area Open 2006

Glamorgan Kindergarten was opened in the mid 1970’s and was typical of kindergartens built in that time – a large rectangle with exposed rafters, built in cubby holes for individual children’s belongings and with a large outdoor area. In the late 1990’s changes were made to the building which modernised the internal setup, making it a lighter and more attractive building for the children and teachers alike. All teachers by law, were qualified, registered teachers and the kindergarten operated under a sessional license with 45 children attending in the morning and another 45 (4 years old) attending in the afternoon.

Many changes have taken place with the outdoor environment since the 1970’s. A fort structure was demolished, sandpit moved and later on altered again. Sun shades have been added where needed and a shed provided for the storage of sandpit toys. In 2006 the kindergarten opened a very special area which utilised an up to then an unusable space on a steep slope at the side of the sandpit. A 10 month focus by the committee of the time, the teachers and parents provided a fantastic exploration area for the children which is able to be used all year round. During 2009 the kindergarten diversified to operate what is known as a Kindergarten Day Model, with better child/adult ratios and an extra teacher appointed.
