Transition To School

Introduction

Parents are expected to make an active choice as to which school their child will attend. Some schools have a zoning policy and this is one of the questions parents should ask when enquiring about a suitable school. The Ministry of Education provides helpful advice on how to choose a school.

School visits

Schools encourage children/parents to visit before starting school and these visits vary from school to school.

Learning links between kindergarten and schools

Our curriculum promotes the development of skills that will enable children to make the transition to school easily. For example, children gain early literacy and numeracy skills along with valuable social skills. They also gain independence and life skills such as managing their own lunch and taking responsibility for their clothing.

Our teaching staff compile individual Portfolios for all children that show the learning that has occurred for the child at kindergarten.  It includes snap shots of children at play, documents through narrative stories, their interests and shows direction for extension. We love parents input into these wonderful records of their child’s time at Kindergarten. We encourage you to share these Portfolios with your child’s teacher at school.

Kindergarten teachers also liaise with teachers at their local schools and encourage them to visit the kindergarten.
