Learning and Development:
We have started the year off with a teacher led focus that we will be looking to continue throughout the year. The focus is the town that we live in, Warkworth, and the part that we all play in it. To begin this we have started looking at families. We have asked for family photos, we are talking to the children about families, what they are for and how they make us feel. We have also been talking about our houses and letterboxes as well as our kindergarten family. We are trying to layer the learning and take it slowly so that our children have time to really develop their ideas on these topics. This fits alongside professional development undertaken by the team during the holiday break with Barbra Jordan, Lynne Foote and the team from Roslyn Kindergarten
We have discussed where children live, what families are for, what their favourite parts of Warkworth are and many more things. We have been on one trip to town and are going on another to Taylor’s farm to look at Warkworth from another perspective (the ridge of their farm). We are hoping to give our children a real sense of belonging in their town, to make them think about Warkworth from many different perspectives, as well as making the town aware that we are here as a kindergarten.
We have also been looking at the magical experience that is metamorphosis as the children have been absolutely fascinated by this process happening before their eyes. We have a wonderful caterpillar environment for our children to watch this process through.
We have noticed that with the changes we have made to our environment as well as some of the new equipment that we have purchased (such as the fairy door) there has been a rise in the magic and wonder the children are experiencing. We hear it in their play, their discussions and notice it in their art. A lovely reflection of our philosophy statement “...we create a changing environment that reflects the magic, wonder and fun of childhood...”
