What do I learn at kindergarten?

Mosaic designed by founding member
I learn to be away from you - my parents - and this may take me some time
I learn to be with teachers and other adults,
I learn to be with a large group of children,
I learn to work alone,
I learn to share and cooperate,
I learn simple rules and routines,
I learn to complete a task or activity,
I learn to be independent but not afraid to ask for help,
I learn to select and choose,
I learn to share my family and experiences with others,
Remember I will learn at my own rate,
and this may be faster or slower than others.
I learn a great deal from a variety of kindergarten activities. All the activities at the kindergarten, both inside and outside, are provided to allow me to develop as a happy, healthy person.
I need to explore the whole kindergarten environment both inside and out. Through climbing, building, digging and running I learn to organize and direct my play, while learning about my safety limits. My confidence and my physical strength will grow.
I learn about my world as I explore by:
· Finding out what things are called.
· How they work.
· What they are made of and who makes them.
· How they feel, taste, smell, look and sound.
· Will they hurt me.
· How do they grow and develop.
At kindergarten I also begin to learn skills which I need later on in life. I am learning pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-maths skills all the time and in all the areas. I learn to understand numbers, shapes and colours; the difference between big and small, top and bottom, left and right. I learn to handle books, pencils, brushes and scissors.
I may not learn all these skills before I am five, but I will learn some of them, and I will need a lot of practice.
My language and my listening skills will grow with all the stories, poems, singing and music that I hear.
As I am doing, I am learning. Because I do not always take something home, does not mean I have not been busy. There are other things for me to discover and explore like nature, blocks, the family corner, sand and puzzles.
I learn through all the activities, because I want to, and it’s fun.
To get the most from kindergarten, I need to be able to do it my way, and my way is through play.
I may have difficulty exploring or understanding my feelings at a young age, but –
· I can let them out in play
· I can express them in my art
· I can find successful activities to let off steam.
I may get dirty, wet or even a little hurt while I am finding out about things—but if I make a discovery, then it has been worth it.
We hope that you and your child enjoy your time at Whangaparaoa Kindergarten.
